You should also find out about the plants that grow well in your area, the season of planting and the best place to source these.
Know your soil type
The type of soil can determine how the plant grows and how prone it will be to infestations. It can be loamy, sandy, or clay. Loamy soil is the best to grow plants. It has a goos balance of silt and clay that provides good drainage. The other two types can be fixed simply by adding some compost or peat. But to do this, you should also do a soil test.
There is a simple test to determine the type: wet a little soil and try to form a ball. Sandy soil will crumble, clay will stay tight and slick, while loamy soil will make a loose ball. You should also do a soil test to check the pH, nutrients, salt and organic levels in the soil. A soil test tells you how nutritious the soil is. If the soil is poor in these essential element you can rectify it by just adding these into the plant bed or potting mix.
Plan your garden
Every good beginning starts with a plan. A garden must be planned carefully to allow for different planting seasons and what you want to grow. A garden plan is also about the layout.
