How Dyes are Affecting Human directly or indirectly?

Textile and dye industry is one of the top polluting industries in the world. With the use of direct dyes and chemicals, industries release out toxic waste in water that pollutes our oceans. The sea acts as lifeblood of our ecosystem and human is directly and indirectly destroying it! Each year, human creates more than 8 million of plastic waste, which is later dumped into the sea. If you really want to help the environment, you must understand how polluted ocean affects human.

Oceans are fundamental to the planet health and lifeblood of the ecosystem as stated above. If the mankind wants to survive and prosper, a need of developing harmonious relationship with the oceans should be taken seriously.

The Devil in the Deep Sea

Do you know? 70% of the oxygen human breathe is released by marine plants! In fact, 97% of the Earth’s water is contained within the ocean. Almost 30% of CO2 emissions created by humans are absorbed through ocean.

Our oceans today are on the brink of disaster. Billions of tones of plastic is suffocating the marine life and making ocean a dead bed! There are over 405 dead zones exist across the world, where nitrification has exhausted oxygen in the water.

What are the causes behind the generation of dead zones in the ocean?

The culprits are –

  • The toxic chemicals released from industries. The pollutants from industrial sources include-
    • Asbestos
    • Lead
    • Mercury
    • Nitrates
    • Oils
    • Petrochemicals
    • Phosphates
  • Land run off

Land run off occurs when excess water from flooding or rain flows above the land and into the ocean. In this condition, water takes away all man-made contaminants that come in the way and pollute the ocean. It includes-

  • Fertilizer
  • Petroleum
  • Animal waste
  • Pesticides
  • Oil spills

It’s a sign of worry when any ship carrying crude oil travels from miles through ship because any misleading can cause mishap and crude oil carried by the ship may spill across the ocean. Crude oil is toxic and hard to clean up.

  • In 1990s- around 1,133,000 tonnes of oil lost happened
  • In 2000s- around 208,000 tonnes of oil lost happened
  • In 2010-2014- 26,000 tonnes of oil lost happened

Other than this, littering in the ocean is also a culprit behind marine pollution. Human don’t realize the fact that contaminated water will affect the food chains and several health disorders will occur-

  • Hormonal issues
  • Reproductive issues
  • Kidney damage
  • Nervous system damage
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Heart disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stomach problems
  • Rashes

Direct Dyes and textile industry is not the only one that is polluting marine, but several chemical industries are on the list. It is the duty of every human to make all possible efforts to lower the pollution in marine.
