Different Types Of Wires And Cables

The movement of electric current from one point to the other with the help of electrically charged particles is called conduction of electricity. Materials that let this process happen are called conductors. To conduct electricity, we need materials with specific physical and chemical properties.

Metals conduct electricity easily. Hence they are used as the material used to make wires. Wires bunched together and collectively covered with an insulating sheath are called cables. There are a huge number of Wires and Cable Manufacturers in India. Cables are made of wires of the desired chemical properties wrapped around each other and then covered with an insulating cover.

Wires and cables are essential to any electrical device. They are built in manufacturing companies all over the world. A good wire is characterized by its properties of ductility, low resistance and high conductivity. Similarly, a good cable is characterized by the quality of wire used and the insulation provided. Wire and cable manufacturers use various types of materials for both the wire and its insulation depending on the requirement and cost.

Wires are basically conductor metal drawn into thin cylindrical wires. Good metals with high conductivities such as copper and aluminium are used to make wires. The physical dimensions of the wire increase ductility and conductivity of the material used and reduces resistance. The process of converting a material into a wire is called “wire drawing”. A process called “annealing” is also performed on the wire to remove stresses and to toughen the material.

To make a cable, a number of wires are taken and wrapped around each other to form a thick bunch. This process is to collectivize wires into a cable is called stranding. The process is then followed by insulation. Insulation is done by extrusion of the multiwired conductor with an insulating cover at high temperatures. The quality of insulation depends on the insulation capacity and the heat resistance of the insulating material. Cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) is ideally used for cables that carry high voltage because of its remarkable electrical and physical properties. As required some additional coverings are also added for protection and operation.

Growth in the wire and cable manufacturing industry is linked to the growth of infrastructure, automobile and power sectors and gives direct benefits to the wires and cable manufacturers. This market is on a steady growth. The applications of both wires and cables are vast, ranging from a small bulb to a large spaceship. Hence the need for high quality wire and cable manufacturing companies is immense all over the world.
